GCSE MATHS REVISION
Aiming for Grade 7 in GCSE Maths? There is no official list of "Grade 7 topics". Your grade is based on the marks you earn across Higher-tier papers, and questions can combine several areas of mathematics.
This guide focuses on the skills and habits that are especially important when working towards strong Higher-tier performance: secure crossover knowledge, confident Higher content, algebraic fluency and the ability to solve unfamiliar multi-step problems.
Updated 1 October 2026
Stage 1 of 3
Students aiming for Grade 7 still need the core GCSE skills to be fast, accurate and reliable. Weaknesses in basic arithmetic or algebra can block access to much harder questions.
Stage 2 of 3
Once the core skills are reliable, build confidence with the Higher-only content that extends the GCSE curriculum.
Stage 3 of 3
Knowing Higher topics is not enough on its own. Strong Higher performance depends on recognising the mathematics, combining methods and reasoning accurately in unfamiliar situations.
Practise questions where algebra must be rearranged, substituted or combined before the main method becomes clear.
Work on questions that combine areas such as algebra and geometry, ratio and graphs, or probability and fractions.
Explain why a result is true, justify steps and use mathematical evidence rather than relying only on calculation.
Identify the useful information, decide what mathematics is required and ignore details that are not relevant.
Keep answers exact when appropriate instead of automatically converting surds, fractions or expressions to decimals.
Use estimation, bounds, units and context to decide whether an answer makes sense.
The difference is not simply learning a list of harder topics. Grade 7 performance requires stronger fluency across the full Higher curriculum, greater confidence with Higher-only content and more success on questions where the method is not obvious.
If core Grade 4 and Grade 5 skills are still inconsistent, strengthen those first. Higher questions often depend on them.
Review the core and crossover skills that underpin stronger Higher performance.
Review the Grade 5 Revision PrioritiesAlgebra has the largest approximate weighting on Higher tier and also appears inside many questions from other areas. Strong manipulation, equations, graphs and functions can therefore support performance across the paper.
Aim to become fluent enough that routine algebra does not consume unnecessary time or attention in more complex problems.
A student can know the method for a topic but still struggle when it appears in a different form. Include unfamiliar and mixed questions so that you practise choosing the method rather than simply recognising a worksheet heading.
Higher papers can assess any part of the specification, so do not abandon crossover content once you begin studying Higher-only topics.
— You can solve typical questions independently and explain your method clearly.
— You understand the topic but are inconsistent or struggle when the question looks unfamiliar.
— You do not yet understand the method well enough to use it independently.
Prioritise Practise skills first, then Learn skills. Continue revisiting Secure topics through mixed work so that they remain fluent.
Use these habits on Higher papers, especially when a question has several steps.
Write enough mathematics for your method to be followed, especially on multi-step questions.
Do not round early when an exact fraction, surd or expression can be retained.
Use brackets carefully and check powers, roots and trigonometric calculations before accepting the display.
Do not sacrifice several accessible questions by spending too long on one difficult problem.
