GCSE Percentages Questions
A percentage means out of 100. Find a percentage of an amount by converting the percentage to a decimal and multiplying. For an increase or decrease, use a multiplier that includes the original 100%. For reverse percentages, divide the final amount by that multiplier to recover the original. These samples cover core percentage skills, not the whole course.

Worked example
A bicycle costs £240. Its price increases by 15%. Find the new price.
- The new price is 100% + 15% = 115% of the original price.
- Convert 115% to the multiplier 1.15, then calculate £240 × 1.15 = £276.

Common mistakes
- Finding only the change — An increase or decrease question usually asks for the final amount, not just the percentage part.
- Using the wrong multiplier — A decrease uses 1 minus the percentage as a decimal.
- Reversing a discount by adding — The discount was calculated from the original price; divide the final price by the correct multiplier.
